Elevated human body temperature frequently is a reliable indicator of an infection. In recent years due to the severe outbreaks of respiratory-based diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and most recently the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), society has been looking for a rapid, reliable, non-invasive solution to detect elevated human body temperature. 


There usually are four ways to measure a temperature with contact: under the armpit (axillary method), in the mouth (oral method), in the ear (tympanic method) and in the rectum/bum (rectal method). In recent years, infrared technology has enabled accurate human body surface temperature to be measured from the forehead as well.
